Joy to the World, Bright Nights is "Green"

Edmonton’s winter family festival, BrightNights, is not only exhibiting brilliant displays this season, it’s also showcasing greener operations.  In its 11th year, this popular fundraiser is now a carbon-neutral event.

Running from November 21 to January 4 at Hawrelak Park, this Edmonton Chamber of Commerce initiative is a favourite holiday activity for many locals.  With more than 900 displays, some over 13 metres high, BrightNights is North America’s largest Christmas light park.  Even more impressive, this big event isn’t leaving a large environmental imprint.

“In our continued pursuit of environmental sustainability, we are pleased to have made so many strides with BrightNights,” says Chamber President and CEO Martin Salloum. “We are excited that this year we are not only bigger and brighter, but also greener.”

To help BrightNights become carbon neutral, all diesel generators have been removed, and the park has purchased renewable energy through EcoLogo-certified wind facilities in Alberta.  New park displays and signs will use high-efficiency LED lights, and all display lights will be on timers to conserve electricity.  During the event, energy-efficiency tips are being shared with visitors, and all marketing materials are being printed on Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper.

BrightNights has also purchased carbon credits through Terra Verde to offset emissions from the event setup and from vehicles driving through the park during the festival.  These offsets were purchased from Alberta agricultural producers engaged in sustainable practices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
