ME First!

The ME first! program was launched in September 2003, by Alberta Municipal Affairs and Alberta Environment. The four-year program, administered by Climate Change Central, helped municipalities reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase energy efficiency and replace conventional energy sources with renewable or alternative sources.

Over the life of the program, seventy-one Alberta municipalities borrowed $37.8 million in interest-free loans to fund 84 different projects. Combined, these projects will produce an estimated energy savings of $4.3 million and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 53,000 tonnes annually. The funds helped municipalities install energy efficient aeration systems, traffic lights, furnaces and arena controls, to name a few. Please see related stories for stories of municipal innovation.
