Rebate Program to Recycle Polluting Lawnmowers

Climate Change Central is pleased to be supporting a program to get pollution-spewing gas mowers and trimmers off Alberta lawns.

Mow Down Pollution is offering homeowners who turn in their old, two-stroke lawnmowers and trimmers an instant rebate of up to $100 off a new "clean air" model at Home Depot locations across Canada. Event organizer Clean Air Foundation hopes to retire more than 500 of these aging machines in Alberta during the program, running from April 25 to May 4.

"Mow Down Pollution is an excellent and easy way for Albertans to make asignificant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality," says Allan Amey, President and CEO of Climate Change Central, which is providing financial and organizational assistance for the program in Alberta.

Surprisingly, a typical two-stroke, 3.5-horsepower gasoline lawnmower produces as much pollution in one hour as 40 new cars being driven for the same amount of time, or one car being driven 550 kilometers. Through Mow Down Pollution, Albertans can recycle these less energy-efficient units and replace them with electric, push or low-emission gas models.

During the 10-day event, staff and volunteers from Climate Change Central and the Clean Air Foundation, and Home Depot Canada and other organizations will be at all Alberta Home Depot Canada locations, providing customers with information on the program.

Mow Down Pollution's other Alberta supporters include Environment Canada, the City of Calgary, Pick-Your-Part and mower manufacturers Black & Decker, Murray Canada, Gardena Canada and Great States Corporation.

Climate Change Central is a private-public partnership established as a catalyst for and coordinator of activities by Alberta individuals, businesses, institutions and governments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Alberta.

Energy Solutions Alberta is an initiative of Climate Change Central focused on energy efficiency and conservation and is supported by Alberta Environment.
