New Office to Challenge Albertans to Take Action to Fight Climate Change

Alberta groups and individuals taking innovative actions to conserve energy will be featured at an event, today, to launch Alberta's new office of energy efficiency.

The Government of Alberta announced today $250,000 in initial funding to Climate Change Central to establish the office - a one-stop shop for information about energy efficiency and conservation.

"Energy conservation is a key part of Alberta's action plan on climate change," said Minister of Environment Lorne Taylor. "The office of energy efficiency will provide Albertans the tools they need to make a real difference to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by conserving energy."

"The fight against global warming starts with the efforts of individual Albertans," said Allan Amey, President and CEO, Climate Change Central. "We're bringing together Alberta champions in energy efficiency to challenge others to take simple steps to save energy and fight global warming."

The event takes place today, June 11 at 11 a.m. at Climate Change Central, Suite 100, 999 - Eighth Street S.W., Calgary.

Six Alberta individuals and organizations will talk about their actions to save energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and benefit the environment. They include:
  • an Edmonton bicycle commuter who pedals 26 km to and from work every day,
  • a Calgary contractor who stands to save about $400 a year by making his house more energy efficient,
  • Red Deer school students who cut their school's energy demands with simple, quick-fix solutions,
  • the City of Calgary's solar retrofit on its bus barns,
  • a Calgary small business located in a building powered and heated by gas-fired microturbines, and
  • the Town of Okotok's efforts to save water, energy, and solid waste.

Alberta-based companies, governments and non-profit organizations will also be on hand to showcase energy-saving tips, creative tele-commuting schemes and home audit advice.

Climate Change Central is a private-public partnership established in 1999 to serve as a catalyst for, and coordinator of, activities by individuals, businesses, institutions and governments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Alberta.
