Projects target greenhouse gas emissions in Alberta's key resource sectors04/05/2001As part of Alberta's strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, Climate Change Central is investing in two new projects that will estimate the costs of injecting carbon dioxide into underground geological formations in Alberta, and calculate greenhouse gas savings that Alberta farmers can achieve through changes to how they manage their land respectively. The announcement for joint federal-provincial funding for both projects was made by Alberta Environment Minister Lorne Taylor and Acting Assistant Deputy Minister of Western Economic Diversification Canada Jim Fleury -- on behalf of Ron J. Duhamel, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Secretary of State for Western Economic Diversification - at the official opening of Climate Change Central's new office in Calgary. "Western Economic Diversification Canada is proud to support research designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said Fleury, reading from a letter from Duhamel. "Development of technologies like carbon sequestration not only helps us address climate change, it also opens up new business opportunities." "The only way we are going to fulfil our commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is by working together," said Taylor. "That means resource industry and agriculture have the numbers to make the right environmental decisions." "We need a comprehensive evaluation of what our new climate change technology options are," said Allan Amey, President and CEO of Climate Change Central. "These projects will do just that." Climate Change Central co-ordinated the funding from Western Economic Diversification and Alberta Environment for both projects. The organization's multi-stakeholder programs focus on innovation, technology, education and public participation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen Alberta's environmental energy advantage.
