Round Table Launches Climate Change Central

An Alberta Climate Change Round Table was held April 30 - May 1, 1999.  The Round Table brought together Albertans from across the public and private sectors - business and industry leaders, academics, municipal leaders, labour, health organizations, environmental groups and individuals.  These participants focused on a number of common themes that clearly identify the opportunity for Alberta:
  • environmental and economic risks are real and we need to take action;
  • we should act, not react, and chart our own course;
  • we are in this together and will work together - no one group or segment of Alberta's economy can take sole responsibility;
  • we need to be strategic and encourage both innovative short-term and long-term solutions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while increasing market opportunities;
  • we need to measure and communicate our success to the world.

The participants also recommended the establishment of Climate Change Central as a key focus for future actions in Alberta in addressing the challenge of climate change.
