Vince J. Smith
Vince Smith is presently a Board member of C3 and a Board member of Olin Corporation, a North American producer of Chlor-Alkali products such as bleach and caustic soda.
Vince Smith was the past President and CEO of Dow Chemical Canada Inc., a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company, taking retirement in 2004. Smith has held positions within Dow across the continent with local, national and global responsibilities.
While CEO, he had responsibilities for $3 billion dollars worth of sales and over 2,000 employees. Smith was also the Site Director for Western Canada Operations and oversees Dow manufacturing locations in Fort Saskatchewan and Prentiss, Alberta, Sarnia, Milton, Brampton and Weston, Ontario; Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Varennes, Quebec.
Over the years, Smith has been involved with many community groups including the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Junior Achievement and various sporting organizations.
Smith joined Dow Chemical Canada Inc. in Sarnia as an engineer in 1972. He later transferred to Western Canada in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, where he held several management positions in manufacturing and human resources. During this time, he spent more than 15 years directly involved in the production of chlor-alkali products.
He returned to Sarnia in February 1991 as a production manager in Plastic/Design Resins. He was named Site Manager in July 1991. In April 1993, he was named General Manager and Vice President, Eastern Canada Operations. In 1994, he was named Business Director, Global Chlor-Alkali Assets where he chaired the Global Chlor-Alkali Team to optimize the value of Dow’s global chlor-alkali facilities.
Smith was named Vice President and Director of Michigan Operations and Global Manufacturing Director for the Specialty Chemicals business in April 1998.
He received a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from McMaster’s Faculty of Engineering in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Smith lives in the Edmonton area with his wife, Barb. They have two children.
